The Aristocrats trio, Udine, 16/10/2012

Super group The Aristocrats played in Udine in front of a small yet enthusiastic crowd of prog, fusion, progressive rock and jazz fans.  The concert was brought thanks to the folks over at Euritmica.

The band is formed by guitarist Guthrie Govan, bassist Bryan Beller and dynamic drummer Marco Minnemann.  Govan has been defined as “arguably the hottest guitarist on the international music scene today, and his 2006 solo album Erotic Cakes was widely recognized as an instant classic”.   Bryan Beller has instead played with the likes of Steve Vai and Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa) while Marco Minnemann has played with everyone from Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) and Adrian Belew (Zappa, King Crimson) to technical death metal specialists Necrophagist.  He’s looked upon by fans and peers as one of the most gifted drummers around.  So talented is Minnemann that he was once also chosen by the group Dream Theater to sit in for their historic drummer, Mike Portnoy

Their particular brand of music goes from prog to metal to jazz and to progressive rock, something to a certain degree reminiscent of Canada’s great veterans of the genre, Rush.

Big Band, Udine October 13th, 2012

A nice concert by Udine’s Big Band, a jazz orchestra made up of 18 talented musicians.

A pleasant two-hour (free) show which included pieces by Charlie Mingus, Theolonius Monk and the late, great Duke Ellington.  The show was brought to us thanks to the folks over at Euritmica.
