Indeed a most entertaining and very fun-filled concert in Pordenone during the town’s blues festival with two very historical rock bands, the Animals together with the Spencer Davis Group (the latter is famous for having had in its ranks a young 15 year-old by the name of Steve Winwood who once sang on the band’s two most famous songs, “Gimme Some Lovin’” and “I’m A Man”).
In quasi 35° Celcius heat (at 9 pm!) the Animals kicked in with the rock and roll partying. Two original members of that famous British band (sans Eric Burdon though on vocals) from Newcastle were also on hand, drummer John Steel and keyboard player Alan Price. Steel at one point explained to the crowd how back in 1964 everyone had been excited about Chuck Berry’s first-ever visit to England (a hero to both The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, in particular to Keith Richards).
The Animals had written in that period a tune in the basement of a club. That very same tune reached no. 1 in the UK charts and then just 2 months later it also hit no. 1 in the US charts. And then Steel went to his drum set and the band kicked in with their most famous hit, “House Of The Rising Sun”, a favorite with both young and old fans alike.
The Animals were then joined on stage by keyboard player Eddie Hardin of the Spencer Davis Group (Spencer Davis himself was absent due to illness).
A great little two-hour summertime show.
