Metallica, Udine May 13th, 2012

Another great show which was brought to us thanks to the folks over at Azalea Promotion: Metallica, their only Italian gig too, at the Stadium in Udine.  Some 40,000+ fans showed up in Udine, apparently an Italian record for Metallica (sources told me they only usually average 28,000 per concert)!

It was the third time for me to see this great heavy metal band after their first show way back in Modena in 1991 together with AC/DC and Black Crowes during the “Monsters Of Rock” tour and then in 2006 (circa) in Padua together with LostProphets and Slipknot.

The great treat was the day before their concert  near the stadium when we presented Britain’s author Joel McIver and his great book on the band, “Justice For All: the Truth About Metallica”.  An odd small coincidence: during the presentation I spoke about Bon Scott’s epic words of 1975 and AC/DC’s great song: “It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock and Roll”) in relation to the hardships that many bands, including Metallica (such as with the death of bass guitarist Cliff Burton) encounter in their long careers.

The day after at the stadium as the lights went down and Metallica’s show was about to begin, what was blaring full-blast on the speakers?  “It’s A Long Way…”!  I couldn’t believe it, indeed a fitting homage to Bon as many of the folks were signing along to that great song.  No doubt from high above Bon was certainly pleased considering that only two years ago his former band mates had played in that very same stadium in Udine in front of some 47,000 people (pic of me and Joel thanks to my good buddy, Bepi Pappalettera)!  Check it out for yourself on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yO8L_aYERVY

The show then kicked in with the final cemetery scene from Sergio Leone’s spaghetti western, “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” with Ennio Morricone’s song, “Ecstasy Of Glory”, a favorite of Hetfield and Co.  Another nice touch in honor of Italy!  They basically played all of their epic 1991 LP, the "Black Album"!

Unquestionably in tip-top shape Hetfield, Ulrich, Hammett and Trujillo.  Nearly a three-hour concert including fireworks and also a rarity: all members of the band had something to say at the end to the fans as they grabbed the microphones.  Another great concert in Udine!
