Malika Ayane, Udine July 1st, 2010

Italy’s Malika Ayane, born of a Moroccan father and an Italian mother, became the “Queen” of Udine’s quaint castle on July 1st as she kicked off Euritmica’s summer music festival. Malika actually began her singing career in 1995 as part of the chorus at the world-famous La Scala Theatre. In 2009, she took part in the San Remo Festival" with the song "Come Foglie". It reached the second position in the Italian charts.

The Milan native, who this year nearly took home the yearly San Remo music festival (and she really should have, that’s just how captivating her music really is), certainly won the hearts of the Udine fans who showed up for her very “soave” concert.

The first part consisted of Ayane clad in a sexy black dress whereas the second part saw her in a white dress. Seven great musicians backed her up during the very entertaining show, so much so that at one point Malika sincerely looked moved during the encores by the affection shown by her fans. One of her most famous hits was actually a telephone company jingle called “Feeling Better”. That was followed by “Ricominciamo Da Qui” which at the same San Remo festival won her the critics’ prize as one of the best festival songs.

Things got rather “hot” under the stage as fans wanted more of her. You could see that she was honestly touched by all the fanfare. And just three days later the same scene would be repeated as she would be down in Rome playing in front of an all sold-out audience at the splendid Villa Celimontana (where yours truly has seen the likes of B.B. King and Bill Wyman).

Hopefully, Malika, with her sort of Macy Gray-style voice, will also one day conquer foreign audiences. She really does deserve it!
